What is the Lights On Afterschool Campaign?
Launched by the Afterschool Alliance (U.S.) in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool! is an annual campaign that brings awareness to the importance of After School Programmes (ASPs), drawing attention to the many ways that these programmes support learners by offering them opportunities to learn new things and unlock their potential. The effort generates media coverage across the country each year. The events send a powerful message that millions more kids need quality After School programmes.
The magnitude of the efforts by the Afterschool Alliance spanning over two decades and culminating in the grand country-wide celebrations on the second last Thursday of October every year, continues to prove that After School Programmes work!
In South Africa
The campaign is co-ordinated by a team comprising The Learning Trust, The Western Cape Youth and After School Programme Office, and The Community Chest. With new insights around the importance of after school programmes since Covid, the team wants to see an even bigger campaign in South Africa this year.
